CompTIA launch new A+ exams

The Computing Technology Industry Association has announced new exams which will be available to sit from December 2006 onwards. The current exams, 220-301 and 220-302 will still be available to sit until March 31st 2007.

The State of IT in 2006

Recruitment specialist CW Jobs stated that jobs for IT contractors have soared from 140,000 to 230,000. The demand is still led by Retail and Finance in the South East.

The skills in demand are SQL, VB, Java, .NET, Oracle, but increasingly clients want this to be backed up by good business skills.

Certification Evolution - Job role Certifications for your future:

The certification industry has evolved dramatically over the years. From vendor-driven programs designed to industry  and customer-driven programs designed to solve large gaps in the ability to provide services across a number of technologies, disciplines and vendors.

As is the case with most forms of professional accreditation in other fields, broadly accepted industry standards of knowledge, skill and performance must be easily portable from job to job, industry to industry, based on the ability to support a job role or job function.

Tech Sector Revival

Rates across the board seem to be showing a small but steady increase. Unix and Linux vacancies offer best news with rate increases of between 7% and 11% to around the £30.50 level. Other skills in demand include C#, Java, C++, SQL and VB

Councils hike rates to keep IT Contractors:

"Local councils are likely to pay whatever they need to get the job done.”

“Two years ago job security to IT practitioners was very important – but now we’re in a buoyant market ICT workers will be more willing to move back into the private sector, so councils need to hike their rates to ensure their IT contractors don’t ‘hop and jump.’”

Contractor UK Market Report:

The hourly average for the ten most commonly requested contractor skills in March was £30.93.

One report this month from Imis highlights the growing IT skills gap and lack of willingness by firms to train their IT staff. The Olympic, ID cards and NHS IT modernisation were all highlighted as vast extra drains on the IT skills pool. Karen Price, chief executive of E-Skills reckons, “we are back in another growth cycle that will lead to an acute skills shortage.”
